The House on Vine Street

Chapter Four

The girls woke the next morning to the sounds of birds singing in the tall monkey puzzle tree outside the Master bedroom. Holly threw back the bed covers, ran to the window and drew back the curtains. "Oh Ivy, it's a beautiful day outside, look at all this lovely sunshine!"

Ivy pulled the covers up over her head. "Oh come back to bed, it's too early to get up yet," she muttered as she snuggled back down in the bed, "and tell those darn birds to shut up!" Ivy was not a morning person at all, she hated being woken up by bird song, and much preferred to wake gently from slumber at her own pace.

Holly ignored her and was down on her hands and knees looking for their clothes that had disappeared from the end of the bed. She finally found them under the bed and was a little bemused by how they managed to be there. Holly draped Ivy's clothes over the foot of the bed and didn't give it a second thought. She took her own clothes to the bathroom, showered, dressed and went downstairs.

The sunlight looked so pretty streaming through the leadlight windows beside the front door, it appeared as softly painted pictures on the tiled floor. Holly was feeling wonderfully rested and eager to begin the final cleaning chores. However, first she needed breakfast, so it was off to the store again, but this time with a decent shopping list, one with enough food to sustain them both for a week.

When Holly returned, she found Ivy in the kitchen putting the kettle on the stove. "Ah so you finally decided the day was too nice to waste?" she asked. Ivy replied, "Now don't you start, I heard noises again coming from in here this time. I knew it wasn't you because I heard you drive off, so I thought I'd better dress and come down to investigate, but there was no one here."

Then they heard a what sounded to them as a muffled chuckle, they looked at each other, and quickly ran straight into the pantry. There in the middle of the pantry floor was this tiny little creature, giggling like it had been tickled by a feather. "I knew something or someone was in this house!" exclaimed Ivy. "What is it?" The little creature looked up at her, somewhat startled and replied in a stern voice, "Why I am Pocket and the keeper of this house."

"What do yo mean keeper of this house?" Ivy retorted, "This is our house, we own it, we purchased it just a week ago." Pocket replied, "Oh that's okay, you can own it, I just have to keep it safe." The girls didn't know what to say to that, but one could tell by the looks on their faces they were a somewhat confused. They sat down on the floor beside Pocket, continuing to ask him questions and he went on to explain all about the covenant that came with the house each time it was sold.

Holly and Ivy were completely unaware of any covenant, this was the first they had heard of any such thing being attached to their new home. However, it wasn't such a bad thing, in fact it was quite exciting learning all about this strange covenant and how Pocket and his family had become to be keepers of this fine home. The two girls listened intently as he acquainted them with the history of the Watch family.

Neither Holly, nor Ivy, had any idea their was so much history connected to this newly purchased home of theirs. This was an awesome discovery and they were very excited to know more. So needless to say, no further work was done. They spent the rest of the day in the kitchen, sharing food with Pocket and listening to his very interesting stories. As Pocket continued chatting, he was also beginning to realise that these new owners were not the type of humans that he should be wary of, in fact these two girls may even turn out to be his friends.
